Program Description:   A paradigm shift from practicing in healthcare to management in healthcare from a business perspective. Understanding the conceptual framework of leadership within the healthcare environment. This five part series provides the essentials of leadership and examines it through the lens of values and explores how values play a major role in the leader’s effective performance.

Course Objectives: Upon the completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • 1. Understand and apply the key values that influence a leader's behaviors, priorities, thought processes and actions.
  • 2. Compare and contrast Leadership theories and concepts
  • 3. Assess team values and effectiveness at all career stages
  • 4. Assess and apply principles of conflict management
  • 5. Evaluate team's primary activities and structure for effectiveness
  • 6. Perform a self-evaluation and interpret the results and design a proposal for change when appropriate

Program Audience:  Rehabilitation professionals (Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Assistant, Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Speech Language Pathologist), Nurses, Community Health Workers, Social Workers, Public Health Workers and other healthcare professionals entering into management or in leadership positions.

Semester 1
Semester Topic: Leadership in Healthcare: The Essentials

Start Date: Monthly Rolling Admissions 

Course Outline:

Description: This course discusses the common obstacles that leaders face in healthcare. It will also provide a fundamental concept for understanding leadership behaviors, priorities, thought processes and actions to build on for leadership in healthcare.

Objectives:
1. Understand and apply the key values that influence a leader’s behaviors, priorities, thought processes and actions.
2. Compare and contrast Leadership theories and concepts
3. Discuss and define values-based leadership
4. Understand the challenges of senior leadership and its impact on the organization

Semester 2

Semester Topic: Leadership in Healthcare: Management and Personal Values

Start Date: Monthly Rolling Admissions 

Course Outline:

Description: This course will present the impact of using respect, ethics and integrity as the foundation of leadership. It will explore and examine the servant leader along with the aspects of the principles of interpersonal communications. Components of being a change agent within the leadership role will also be discussed.

Objectives:
1. Articulate the importance of respect as it relates to leadership
2. Synthesize the impact of being a servant leader within the healthcare environment
3. Apply appropriate ethics and integrity when given a case scenario
4. Apply the principles of a change agent within the leadership role

Semester 3

Semester Topic: Leadership in Healthcare: Team and Personal Values

Start Date: Monthly Rolling Admissions 

Course Outline:

Description: This course will examine the principles of conflict management within the leadership role. The concepts and strategies of developing trust with team members for cohesiveness and effective collaboration will also be discussed.

Objectives:
1. Execute the leadership strategies of team building and participation
2. Create a Conflict Management Policy
3. Assess and apply principles of conflict management
4. Understand and apply the principles of gaining team trust in the leadership role

Semester 4

Semester Topic: Leadership in Healthcare: The Evaluation Process

Start Date: Monthly Rolling Admissions 

Course Outline:

Description: This course outlines and examines the components of assessing team effectiveness. A look into how to assess their primary activities and structure will be a key focus. Additionally, the course will also present the essentials in performing leadership self-evaluation and the steps in interpreting the results.

Objectives:
1. Assess team values and effectiveness
2. Evaluate team’s primary activities and structure for effectiveness
3. Perform a self-evaluation and interpret the results and design a proposal for change when appropriate

Semester 5

Semester Topic: Leadership in Healthcare: Putting it All Together

Start Date: Monthly Rolling Admissions 

Course Outline: This is a comprehensive case study assessment that allows the participant to demonstrate their knowledge and ability to perform the objectives set forth for the Leadership in Healthcare certificate program.
